History of our church
The early roots of Christ Lutheran Church date back to 1922, when Lutheran church services were held in halls and in members’ homes in Sexsmith. This early congregation, called
Bennville Norwegian Lutheran Congregation, constructed the church building and held its first service there in 1937. The congregation reorganized and became Christ Lutheran Church in 1939.
The church building was moved onto a full basement in 1959. In June 1960, lightning caused a fire which resulted in extensive damage to the interior of the church. The church was then rededicated in July 1962.
Through the decades, until 1992, Christ Lutheran shared pastors with other Lutheran churches in the area, including Calvary Lutheran Church of La Glace, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Northmark, Valhalla Lutheran Church, and Trinity Lutheran Church of Grande Prairie.
Christ Lutheran Church was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (and its predecessor organizations) until 1994, when it joined fellowship with the Canadian Association of Lutheran Congregations.
We’re grateful that God’s provision has allowed us to continue serving one another and our community through all these years.
"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful."
Hebrews 10:23 (NIV)
